The newly appointed Colombo Stock Brokers’ Association (CSBA) President and capital market specialist Jaliya Wijeratne is set to provide immediate focus on educating the general public on ways to invest in the stock market while also focusing equally on the digitalisation of the sector.
Speaking to The Sunday Morning Business, Wijeratne stated that he would also be looking at how to get the stock market going smoothly and would obtain necessary support from the government institutions to do so.
“Getting the market vibrant and attractive for people to invest in is really important. For any investment there should be a return and with the current low-interest rate regime, it is a phase where people can generate impressive dividend income,” Wijeratne added.
He added that there are many instruments that have to be introduced to the market in order to fasten the process of stock investment along with the help of the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE).
Wijeratne was appointed as the President of CSBA at its Annual General Meeting on Thursday (1), succeeding Lanka Securities Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kosala Gamage.
Wijeratne who has over 20 years of experience in investment advisory in capital markets is the CEO of First Capital Equities Ltd. He previously held positions as Commercial CBC Crosby Capital Ltd. Senior Investment Advisor, DFCC Stockbrokers Senior Manager – Sales, and SMB Securities Director – Institutional Sales.
Established in 1995, the CSBA is an apex industry body, representing stockbroking companies licensed and regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC). As of 2020, the association consists of 18 member companies striving to develop the Sri Lankan economy.
