14 Feb 2022

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has released a media statement condemning the attack that took place on journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama's home in the early hours of this morning. The media release statement mentioned that the television programme hosted by Samarawickrama has revealed the names of people who have supported the Government in their dealings, and it might be because of this reason that Samarawickrama was targeted and that such acts were only an attempt to silence journalists around the country. "We urge journalists to not be silenced by such acts as these are only attempts to silence journalists and the freedom of speech. The police are currently investigating the attack and we must allow them to carry out their investigation completely," the statement read. Additionally, the JVP statement mentioned that the JVP assumes that there has been some sort of political affluence behind the attack on Samarawickrama's home, and urged the Government to act swiftly on the investigation. "Journalists who have always been outspoken in the past have received threats and the Government must understand that however much threats are made to media personal, the freedom of speech cannot be dictated upon and journalists cannot be silenced," it read. The statement finally concluded that the JVP condemns the attack on the Samarawickrama's home and that the JVP will back Samarawickrama and ethical journalism in the future as well.
