JVP to meet UNP and SLMC

17 Mar 2019

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is to meet party leaders of the United National Party (UNP), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Democratic People’s Front (DPF), and All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) to obtain their support to abolish the executive presidency. JVP Propaganda Secretary MP Vijitha Herath told The Sunday Morning that the JVP had already met Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to make them aware about the importance of abolishing the executive presidency. MP Herath said the JVP’s plan was to accelerate the process and therefore they would complete the meetings with all political parties represented in Parliament within the next three months. Herath stressed that the UNP had initially expressed their readiness to abolish the executive presidency but the JVP was not sure if the position taken by the UNP had changed; so they had decided to meet Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss the issue. In addition, MP Herath said they had already started re-organising the party campaign at the grassroots level to face the upcoming elections. He also said the JVP was ready to face any election and it did not matter which election came first.
