Kandy-Colombo march by SJB starts today

26 Apr 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera The protest march organised by the main Parliamentary Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), from Kandy to Colombo, demanding the immediate resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the present Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)-led Government, was scheduled to commence today (26). Accordingly, SJB members and supporters are to worship at the Temple of the Tooth Relic today in the morning, before the march proceeds from near the Kandy fair to Mawanella Town. Subsequently, the march will proceed from Mawanella to Galigamuwa Town tomorrow (27), from Galigamuwa to Danowita Town on 28 April, from Danowita to Yakkala Town on 29 April, and from Yakkala to Peliyagoda Town on 30 April.  The march will end in Peliyagoda. The May Day rally organised by the SJB will be subsequently held on 1 May at the Campbell Park grounds in Colombo. Meanwhile, addressing a media briefing held yesterday (25), an SJB Parliamentarian stated that if the President is not ready to resign, respecting the demands of the people, the SJB is ready to remove him from power with the people. He added that the march, which starts today, is its first step.  “Today, the youth have abandoned all divisions in a new way and created a strange kind of struggle. Therefore, as politicians, we are ready to start our struggle in the Parliament. We ask Rajapaksa to resign by 30 April. If not, the people will come to Colombo and send you home by 1 May. We are ready to send the President home using not only the no-confidence and impeachment motions, but also the people's power,” he said. A large number of protests are currently being held throughout the country, demanding reduction in the rising cost of living and a solution to the shortage of goods. As these issues have escalated in recent times, protests are now being held demanding the resignation of President Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, and the current Government. Also, thousands of people are currently engaged in a protest at the Galle Face Green with the demonstration marking its 18th consecutive day today.
