Landslide warnings in three provinces

06 Oct 2021

  • Daily showers above 75 mm to continue
BY Buddhika Samaraweera  The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for a total of four districts in three provinces and advised the public to be watchful of possible slope failures, rock falls, cutting failures, and ground subsidence, given the nearly full day of rain experienced in many of these areas yesterday (5).  Accordingly, the NBRO has issued level one (yellow) landslide warnings to a total of nine divisional secretariat divisions (DSDs), namely Eheliyagoda, Imbulpe, Kuruwita, Ratnapura, Elapatha, Nivitigala, Kalawana, Ayagama, and Kiriella in the Ratnapura District of the Sabaragamuwa Province, since the rainfall in those areas had exceeded 75 millimetres (mm) yesterday (5). In addition, the Dehiowita DSD in the Kegalle District of the Sabaragamuwa Province has also been issued level one landslide warnings. Landslide warnings have also been issued to the Nagoda, Neluwa, and Elpitiya DSDs and surrounding areas in the Galle District of the Southern Province, given the 75 mm rainfall in the areas. The Bulathsinhala and Palindanuwara DSDs in the Kalutara District of the Western Province have also been issued level one landslide warnings. During the landslides early warning period, the NBRO advised the public to pay attention to the development of cracks on the ground and ground subsidence, the slanting of trees, cracks appearing on the floors and the walls of buildings which are built at slopes, and the sudden appearance of springs and emerging muddy water. “People should move immediately away from areas where they notice such signs of landslides,” the NBRO stated. It also announced that the people living in landslide-susceptible areas should be extra vigilant and should be ready to move to safe places if rainfall continues. Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department yesterday announced that showers or thundershowers would occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western, and Southern Provinces today (6). Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere during the afternoon or night, it added.
