* Oshini Gunawardena wins gold at FIDE Youth Chess

Devindya Oshini Gunawardena, nine, yesterday (31 August) emerged gold medal winner of U-10 Girls’ Online FIDE Youth Chess World Cup 2021.

Gunawardena from Ferguson High School, Ratnapura beat Megan Althia Paragua of USA convincingly in the final of the event.

She is the youngest girl in Sri Lanka to win gold a FIDE chess event so far. The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) made an immediate cash award to both Gunawardena and her Coach Akhila Kavinda upon their historic achievement.

* Dialog Axiata congratulates Tokyo Paralympic heroes

The official sponsor of the National Paralympic team for over two decades, Dialog Axiata PLC, has congratulated the achievement of Dinesh Herath, the gold-medal winner at men’s javelin ‘F46’ category with a world record performance, and Samitha Kodithuwakku, who won bronze, also in javelin, in ‘F64’, on Sunday (30 August) at the Tokyo Paralympics.

* Emirates, US Open airline partner for tenth year

Emirates has become the official airline of the 2021 US Open tennis championships for the tenth year in a row.

The airline will once again connect tennis fans from around the world for this iconic Grand Slam tournament through its extensive global route network and flight connections, a media communiqué said on 30 August.
