Mahara Prison clash: Postmortem report submitted to court

The report of the experts’ committee on the postmortems of another four inmates who died during the Mahara Prison unrest was submitted to the Wattala Magistrate’s Court yesterday (23). The decision regarding the disposal of the remains is expected to be delivered on 30 December, according to media reports. A total of 11 inmates were killed in the prison riot which broke out on 29 November, out of which eight posthumously tested positive for Covid-19. The Attorney General’s (AG) Department had requested the Magistrate to permit the postmortems of the deceased inmates to be carried out under a multidisciplinary committee, as per a request made by the legal counsel of the aggravated party for a fair autopsy.   The nominations for the committee members, submitted by AG’s Co-ordinating Officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne, were later approved by the court. The committee consists of Colombo North Teaching Hospital, Ragama, Chief Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) Dr. Sandun Wijewardena; Infectious Diseases Hospital, Mulleriyawa, JMO Dr. S.D.C Perera; Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila, Chief JMO Dr. P.P. Dassanayake, University of Colombo Faculty of Medicine Prof. Jean Perera; and firearms specialist and Deputy Government Analyst P.G. Madawala. When a report on the postmortems of four inmates who died in the prison unrest was submitted to the Wattala Magistrate’s Court on 16 December, the Magistrate ordered to cremate the bodies.
