19 Jul 2021

BY Buddhika Samaraweera   The issuance of tickets at the Maradana Railway Station, which had been suspended from 17 July due to the confirmation of a staff member of the station as being infected with Covid-19, is expected to resume today (19).  When contacted by The Morning, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Station Masters’ Union (SLSMU) Kasun Chamara said that since tickets were not being issued, passengers traveling through Maradana Railway Station were facilitated to travel by train without any inconvenience.  Meanwhile, the Department of Railways had taken steps to cancel the limited number of inter provincial trains that were running from 14 July. Chamara said that the said inter provincial trains were cancelled on 17 July, following the instructions given by the Ministry of Transport.  However, the Railway Department had taken steps to increase the number of trains operating on the four railway lines, the Main line, Puttalam line, Kelani Valley line and Coastal line to 101 from 12 July. According to Chamara, a total of 36 trains are operating on the Main line from Ambepussa, Mirigama, Veyangoda and Gampaha railway stations to Colombo Fort railway station.  Also, 40 trains are operating on the Coastal line from Aluthgama, Kalutara South, Wadduwa, Panadura, Moratuwa and Mount Lavinia railway stations to Colombo Fort. Another 10 trains operate on the Kelani Valley line from Avissawella and Padukka railway stations to Colombo Fort. In addition, Chamara said that 16 trains operate from Kochchikade and Negombo railway stations on the Puttalam line to Colombo Fort and Maradana railway stations. These trains are operating in the morning and evening.
