Migrant workers urged to use Customs-registered couriers

28 Sep 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake The Sri Lanka Customs has requested Sri Lankan migrant workers to use only agencies registered with the Customs Department when dispatching parcels to Sri Lanka. Customs said that it has received multiple complaints about parcels sent by migrant workers being reported missing or damaged, and that investigations have revealed that parcels sent via agencies that are not registered with Customs are reported as missing or have been damaged. The Customs has thus urged migrant workers to utilise only agencies registered with the department when sending parcels from overseas. However, speaking to The Morning, migrant workers in Italy said that they have faced this issue on several occasions, and that the relevant agencies are claiming that Customs officials are responsible for the missing items. “This has never happened in air cargo; only with sea cargo did we face this issue,” one such worker said. Ishara Sandamin, who also experienced the same, said that several olive oil bottles that she had sent were missing, and that the relevant courier company was blaming Sri Lanka Customs. “Recently, after the economic crisis, we have noticed that parcels of sugar, flour, and pasta are also going missing,“ she said.
