  • Army denies underworld/arms trade involvement
BY Dinitha Rathnayake  An investigation related to the recent shooting incident in Ahungalla has been conducted by the special investigation unit of the military police. Speaking to The Morning, Army Spokesman Brigadier Nilantha Premaratne said that the investigations are especially conducted to ascertain any connection with the Army.  “We haven't taken any disciplinary action against the officer involved in this case because he is still a suspect and therefore, the Army would only take action against him after the court decision. The suspect of the case has more than 18 years of service and is believed to have a reason to be involved in such a case, and hence, if proven guilty, he would be discharged from the post.” Premaratne also denied claims of the Army having connections with the underworld, and being involved in the arms trafficking trade. Meanwhile, the Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested yet another suspect in connection with the recent shooting incident at the Ahungalla Town. The 41-year-old suspect, who is a resident of the Rambukkana area, had been arrested in the Wagolawatta, Kurampala area of the Rambukkana Police Division on 23 October, according to the intelligence received by the officers of the Police STF Organised Crimes Unit II.  The arrested individual is suspected to be the driver of the car in which the suspects had arrived when a drive-by shooting took place near a parking lot in front of a tourist hotel in Ahungalla on 12 October. He has been handed over to the Ahungalla Police Station for further investigations. The Type-56 firearm in question used in the shooting reportedly belongs to the Second Commando Regiment of the Kilinochchi camp. The other suspect, a resident of Melsiripura, had been arrested by the STF on 16 October while he was on duty, and the latter has been handed over to the Ahungalla Police for further investigations.  Another arrested suspect, a 41-year-old from Meegahatenna, is accused of aiding and abetting in the shooting incident. He was arrested following a raid carried out at Thalpediwala in Meegahatenna on 15 October in a joint operation by a team of officers from the STF’s Kokmaduwa sub-camp.
