MPs’ security detail to be improved

15 May 2022

By Asiri Fernando Close protection offered to Members of Parliament (MPs) will be increased in light of the prevailing security situation, The Sunday Morning learns. According to Ministry of Public Security Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Jagath Alwis, the Police Department is planning to increase the number of security officers assigned to each MP from the Ministerial Security Division (MSD). An additional two officers are planned to be deployed to each MP from this week, Alwis told The Sunday Morning. According to Alwis, some MPs had requested additional security and with the death of one MP at the hands of a mob last week, a decision had been taken to beef up security. A number of MPs had their homes and properties torched and looted by angry mobs last week, following the assault on peaceful protestors by a politically-motivated mob that left nearly 200 injured and nine dead, including two Police officers. One of the deceased Police officers was a Personal Security Officer (PSO) to an MP, who also succumbed to his injuries following an attack by a mob. Alwis did not comment on other details of security arrangements of MPs except to say that the State was duty-bound to provide them adequate security. The Sunday Morning reliably learns that the MSD is considering a number of security measures to improve the security of MPs apart from increasing the number of protection officers.
