Mullaitivu teacher charged with raping, ‘sextorting’ 8 students

04 Jul 2022

BY Safrah Fazal A teacher at a school in Mullaitivu has been remanded on charges of the extortion of eight underage female students of the same school, of which two, aged 13 and 17 (now aged 19), were allegedly raped while unconscious. This form of extortion is referred to as ‘sextortion’, which is the practice of extorting money or sexual favours from someone by threatening to reveal evidence of their sexual activity. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (3), the Police Media Division (PMD) stated that a complaint had been lodged by an area resident on 19 June against a teacher and six male Advanced Level (A/L) students of the same school who possessed nude photographs and videos of schoolgirls. The complainant had also produced photo and video evidence to the Police. The officer explained that the said teacher who was involved in administrative tasks at the school was also a private tutor who conducted individual math classes for students at their homes, which gave him access to the victims. The 13-year-old and 17-year-old were allegedly raped at their respective homes, where the teacher arrived to conduct private math classes. The teacher, who made it a practice to bring sweets, drinks, and other eatables for his students, had reportedly drugged the girls’ drinks when their parents were away before molesting them while unconscious. The suspect is also accused of having recorded his sexual activities with the girls in order to blackmail them for further sexual favours.  While medical reports reveal that the 17-year-old had been raped once back in December 2020, reports show that the 13-year-old had been raped on numerous occasions. The 17-year-old had attempted suicide on two occasions. Photos and videos of the girls had also been shared with the male students. Another victim whose nude photographs had also been circulated among the teacher-student group had previously been in a relationship with one of the six male A/L students. Her photographs, which had been previously shared with confidence during their relationship, had been circulated among the group immediately following the end of said relationship.  The five remaining students are said to have been forced to send nude photographs to the teacher. Of the eight female victims, only six have been identified thus far. The teacher, who has been charged with the sharing of non-consensual photographs and videos, including the rape of the two underage girls, has been remanded until 7 July. Meanwhile, the six students, who were charged with the sharing of non-consensual intimate videos and photographs, have been released on bail.
