  • State Minister tells Parliament discussions underway towards reopening within next two weeks
The Government is exploring the possibility of lifting restrictions on staging musical shows and operating cinemas within the next few weeks, according to State Minister of National Heritage, Performing Arts and Rural Arts Promotion Vidura Wickramanayake. In Parliament yesterday (4), he had stated that he, along with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, would meet health officials to discuss the resumption of these facilities within the next two weeks. He added that they would also be looking into allowing traditional ceremonies, such as “thovils”, in this manner. Noting that the Government had not been able to do much to help artists and entertainers, who were particularly affected by the pandemic, he stated: “The Prime Minister is looking into the possibility of helping artistes, and to allow musical shows and open cinemas very soon.”
