  • Point at Police buses parked on pavement when cops attempt to fine
BY Buddhika Samaraweera The protestors at the “MynaGoGama” protest zone in front of the Temple Trees parked their vehicles on the pavement in the area yesterday (2) in protest against the Police buses that have been parked on both sides of the main road in front of the Temple Trees, blocking the pavement. When the Police attempted to impose fines on persons who had parked their vehicles on the pavement in the area, the vehicle owners were seen claiming that they had parked their vehicles in the same manner as the Police buses. “According to the Police, it is legal for the Kollupitiya Police to park buses on the pavement. They said until 1 May that the buses were not theirs, but when our protesters were attacked on 1 May, the Police told us not to paste posters on their buses. At the time, they accepted that the buses were theirs,” said one protester. Claiming that the Police were suppressing the people’s struggle to protect those in power, the protesters said however that within a very short period of time, a law would be established in the country that is equal for everyone. They also said that they are engaged in this protest to create an environment where the next generation can live without being harassed by the Police or any other institution. The “MynaGoGama” protest zone in front of the Temple Trees is currently attended by a large number of protesters along with a section of the protestors who are engaged in the protest zone named “GotaGoGama” at the Galle Face Green, demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, and the Government, too having joined the former protest zone carrying canopies and tents on their shoulders on 1 May. One of the protestors in “GotaGoGama” told The Morning that he and his fellow protestors had joined the “MynaGoGama” protest as the latter protest needs to be strengthened in the face of Police pressure at the time. However, he said that the protest at the Galle Face Green would continue with the same vigour.
