  • Bakery owners claim multiple issues have taken ultimate toll
BY Pamodi Waravita  The All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association said yesterday (6) that nearly 1,000 bakeries have closed down in the country due to multiple crises on the economic front, including the recent liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortage in the market. “First it was the shortage of wheat flour in the market, which is still not resolved. Then, the prices of most goods increased, including eggs. The diesel shortage heavily impacted us and now it is the gas shortage. We believe that about 1,000 bakeries have closed down so far,” the association’s President N.K. Jayawardhena told The Morning yesterday. He predicted that with no end in sight to the multiple economic crises faced by the public in the country, more bakeries could face closures in the near future. The association last increased the price of a loaf of bread by Rs. 10 in November 2021, along with several other baked items which faced a price increase of Rs. 5. At the same time, the Canteen Owners’ Association increased the prices of several food items as well. The fuel crisis has been ongoing since the beginning of 2022 due to the forex crisis in the country. Consumers across the country face severe fuel shortages, especially diesel, which is also used in many other sectors, such as the fisheries and agriculture sectors. Meanwhile, a LPG shortage has arisen again in the country since last week, as the retailers in the market have been finding it difficult to open letters of credits (LCs).
