Northern development: Eighteen lagoons to be developed

15 May 2020

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development has taken steps to develop 18 lagoons around the country, including those which were abandoned due to the war in the Northern Province. Speaking to The Morning, Director of the Fisheries Development Unit of the Department of Fisheries H.J.M. Nihal Palitha said the project that was implemented last year had been slowed down due to the prevailing coronavirus situation in the country. A total of 18 lagoons around the country, including the Nandikadal, Thondamanaru, and Nayaru Lagoons in the Northern Province, would be developed, he said. Accordingly, steps have been taken considering the high level of lagoon encroachment in the country and the importance of those lagoons for the fishermen of the respective areas. In the Northern Province, some lagoons have been abandoned and such lagoons should be dredged; related activities are currently ongoing, the Director noted. – Maheesha Mudugamuwa
