Nurses threaten TU action : Demand for PPE and transport

02 Nov 2020

The Government Nursing Officers’ Association (GNOA) warned the Government yesterday (1) that the nurses would refrain from Covid-19 duties unless they are provided with necessary facilities including the personal protection equipment (PPE) and transport facilities. GNOA President Saman Ratnapriya said the nurses play a significant role in the health service with the current Covid-19 outbreak, but they are not provided with the sufficient facilities to continue their duties. “Even though a significant task of managing the Covid-19 pandemic in the country is being conducted by the nurses, the Government has not taken any steps to provide them with the necessary PPE and N95 masks,” he alleged. Ratnapriya further stated that the Association had launched a protest on 31 October at the Matara, Gampaha, and Ingiriya Hospitals. Furthermore, he said that the lack of transport facilities for the nurses who report for duty is a major problem, and if immediate action is not taken to provide these facilities, their members will refrain from reporting for duty.
