Over 200 issues with LP gas cylinders reported since 2015: Alagiyawanna

A report which was compiled by a private investigation company has revealed that since 2015, there has been 233 LP Gas cylinder related destructive incidents to date, revealed State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna. He made this statement while speaking in Parliament today (29). "I am not trying to justify that we have had a few explosions in the last 6 years, and I have to admit that there has been an unusual amount of Gas cylinder relation explosions with a period of a few days. The Consumer Protection Authority has take steps to investigate and ensure this momentum stops. We have revoked gazettes pertaining to LP Gas, and took all measures to ensure an investigation is done," said Aligiyawanna. He went on to state that a couple of months ago, The Litro Gas company had introduced an 18kg gas cylinder to consumers, whereas the Consumer Protection Authority ensured that this was stopped due to the risk in size and use as domestic cylinders. "When this 18kg cylinder was introduced, the Moratuwa University gave us a full report stating that the consumer would not benefit from this 18kg cylinder as in reality it only held 9.5kgs of gas. Based on this additional information, and to benefit the consumer, we took all measures to prevent the cylinder from being distributed," he added. In conclusion, Aligiyawanna stated that it is a natural instinct for peoples attention to be drawn to when an issue arises, and so with the price hike in LP Gas and now the explosions, this issue has now become the highlight, whereas assured that it was his responsibility to ensure proper investigations take place into the recent surge in LP gas cylinder explosions.
