Pardon for Ranjan Ramanayake: Prisons Department to submit report this week

By Asiri Fernando The Department of Prisons will submit a report on the status of former Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Ranjan Ramanayake – who is currently serving a four-year sentence for being in contempt of court – to the Ministry of Justice, The Sunday Morning learns. According to Prisons Media Spokesperson and Commissioner Chandana Ekanayake, the report – which has been requested – is being compiled and will be submitted to the Justice Ministry this week. Responding to a question by The Sunday Morning, Minister of Justice Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said he was awaiting the report and that the Ministry would act on assessing the report before coming to any decision regarding the possibility of a pardon for the former MP. The main Opposition SJB and artistes have been rallying for his release from prison through a presidential pardon.  In June, while serving the four-year sentence, Ramanayake was sentenced to another two years in prison – which was suspended for five years, for the second contempt of court charge – after pleading guilty.
