Police torture extending to UNHRC will result in more reccomendations against SL says expert

01 Nov 2021

When it comes to police torture, if extended to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), another recommendation will be passed against Sri Lanka, says Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law Prof. Prathiba Mahanamahewa. He made this statement yesterday (31). "The 2022 March UNHRC meeting is important to Sri Lanka as torture is one of the main topics against Sri Lanka, as well as another important feature is the torture committee and the torture sessions. When you talk about torture internally, we have seen different forces involved with different activities. So, when it comes to police torture, this is spreading to UNHRC, and when this happens Sri Lanka gets another recommendation passed against itself," said Mahanamahewa. He goes on to say that there should be a proper monitoring mechanism in Sri Lanka, where such activities are closely monitored to stop the "continuation" of the same which has been noted by the UNHRC. "The UNHRC says that they see a continuation in torture, and this must stop. By continuation, law enforcement officers need to be responsible, and action must be taken against those who break the law pertaining to Human Rights", said Mahanamahewa in conclusion.
