Pregnant public officials urged to be stationed close to residences

  • Women Parliamentarian’s Caucus calls for consideration due to transport issues
The Women Parliamentarian’s Caucus urged that pregnant Government officials be assigned to work stations close to their residences, considering the transportation issues arising from the ongoing fuel crisis, and that they be allowed to perform their duties online on a work-from-home basis if this could not be done so that they could continue to work without interference.  This request was made by Caucus Chairperson Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle, in writing, to Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government and Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena.  The Public Administration Circular No. 16/2022, issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government on 17 June 2022, calls for restrictions on calling officials to Government offices. Accordingly, in the letter, the Women Parliamentarian’s Caucus has requested that necessary steps be taken to implement mandatory measures in facilitating pregnant Government officials to be assigned to another work station close to the place of their residence, as mentioned in Section 02 of the said circular. Furthermore, the Women Parliamentarian’s Caucus, in the said letter, also requested special attention towards the possibility of applying this mechanism to private sector employees.
