Price hike on bakery products except bread

14 Jun 2021

Prices of all bakery products apart from bread have been increased following the recent fuel price increase by the Government, according to the All Island Bakery Owners Association. Speaking to The Morning, Association Chairman N.K. Jayawardena said the bakery owners have increased the prices of buns and shorts eats by Rs.5-10 and a 1 kg cake by Rs. 50. “The prices of bread have not been increased but the prices of buns, shorts eats, and cakes have been increased due to the increase in the prices of kerosene oil and diesel, since those have a major bearing on the production, while delivery vehicles are affected by the petrol price revision.” Jayawardena said the Government and the Cost of Living Committee must arrive at a decision to reduce the cost of living and ease the burden of the people. “Due to the prevailing climate in the country, no industry can function where the public will have to bear the burden,” he said. “The Government earlier increased import tariffs on palm oil and imposed a special commodity levy on block fat and margarine last year, causing concerns for the confectionery industry. Subsequent to that, the import of palm oil, fat, and margarine has been reduced. Hence, the local margarine-producing companies have decided to increase the prices of their products due to the escalation of import tax on palm oil and fats,” he said. Meanwhile, speaking to The Morning, Movement for the Protection of Public Rights Convener Asela Sampath said that the current Government has no national policy to control the prices of essential food, fuel, and health services. “We can see how brutal this Government is by witnessing their decisions,” he lamented.
