Refrigerated products, meat, dairy prices likely to be hiked

  • Electricity tariff hike sparks worries of rising price of goods
The prices of refrigerated products, including dairy products and meat, will be increased due to the new electricity tariff rates, warned consumer rights activist Asela Sampath. Speaking at a recent press conference, he claimed that around 6.7 million people are facing starvation at the moment, as it is almost impossible for them to purchase essential food items amidst the current economic crisis. The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has granted approval to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to increase the electricity bill on average by 75% for all categories. “This decision came just after we decided to reduce the price of a lunch packet by 10-20% and a cup of plain tea by Rs. 20-30. All essential items’ prices would also increase due to the electricity bill hike, and who would be responsible for that? At the least, the Government should try to provide essential items through Sathosa outlets at reasonable prices. The price of a kilogram of sugar has increased to Rs. 270-350, a kilogram of big onion is still at Rs. 240, and 100 grams of chilli powder costs around Rs. 250 at the moment. Why can’t they introduce solar power instead of promoting electricity?” Sampath queried. Meanwhile, Indrajith Perera, of the All Island Communication Owners’ Association, also speaking at a press conference, charged that the increase in electricity bills is unfair.  “The power cut is also during peak hours, and therefore, we have to face great difficulties. The price of an A4 paper bundle has increased from Rs. 580 to Rs. 3,200, while a photocopy and printout would also increase by Rs. 5. Why is this Government pressuring the small- and medium-scale business folk? We need to fight against this. Raise a black flag at your location and show that you are unhappy with this situation,” he said.
