Today marks 61 years of the passing of former Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike.
September 26th is the day of commemoration for the former Prime Minister Solomon West Ride-way Dias Bandaranaike. A memorial ceremony given by important political leaders, in the presence of former President Maithripala Sirisena was held yesterday (25) at the Speaker's House.
S. W. R. D. died from multiple gun shot wounds on September 26th, 1959. As a result of his death, his wife Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike became the first female Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in 1960.
