Resurgence of Covid-19 : 130 ICU beds ready to treat patients

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa Around 130 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds are ready to manage Covid-19 patients around the country, according to the health authorities. Medical Services Deputy Director General Dr. Lal Panapitiya told The Morning that only five patients were currently being treated at the ICU at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH). “There are around 140 ICU beds in the country, out of which 130 beds have been allocated to manage Covid-19 patients, mainly in hospitals in Homagama and Mulleriyawa,” he added. All ICU beds are equipped with ventilators, he said. According to Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, a total of 414 more persons tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday (29). All fresh cases were linked to the Minuwangoda-Peliyagoda cluster. According to reports, 62 of them were identified from quarantine centres while the remaining 352 were close contacts of earlier cases. Meanwhile, 67 individuals who previously tested positive for Covid-19, were discharged from medical care after making complete recoveries. According to the situation report, 12 persons at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), two at the Welikanda Base Hospital, 25 at the Kattankudy Hospital, eight at the Teldeniya Base Hospital, nine at the Homagama Base Hospital, and one at the Galgamuwa Base Hospital have returned to health. This new development brings the total number of novel coronavirus recoveries reported in the country to 4,142 as of last evening, while Sri Lanka’s confirmed cases stand at 9,205. However, 5,044 of them are still under medical care.
