Rice imported to bust rice shortage claims: Bandula

12 Jan 2022

The reason as to why the decision was made to import rice into Sri Lanka was to dismiss claims that the price of a kilo of rice would increase to Rs 300 by the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April, said Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena. He made this statement during a media brief today (12). "Consumers are put through a lot of stress due to these claims of exorbitant prices of rice by April, considering this, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa informed the cabinet ministers, along with the Minister of Finance, to make arrangements to import rice. As the Minister of Trade, I will do all things within my means to ensure that the price of rice will be regulated, and I will make arrangements that the price of a Kilo of Nadu rice will remain below Rs100, and for whatsoever reason, the maximum price of a kilo of nadu rice will not exceed Rs 105 and will be sold at the Sathosa. I have also made arrangements to regulate the price of Samba rice to Rs 130," said the Minister of Trade. Earlier last week, the cabinet ministers approved the import of 100MT of rice which was to be imported from Myanmar.
