Sampanthan blames economic crisis on unresolved war-related issues

24 Mar 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader and Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) MP R. Sampanthan has questioned how other socioeconomic issues in the country can be solved without addressing the issues that have contributed to the war, which has had a huge impact on the country’s economy for more than 30 years. Speaking at the all-party conference chaired by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday (23) to discuss the current economic situation in the country, he questioned: “The 30-year-long civil war in the country has had a major impact on the country’s economy. That war was caused by a serious social issue. That is the lack of sovereignty of one community in the country. However, that issue is still unresolved. How can other issues in the country be solved in such a situation?” He added that devolution of power is needed in order to ensure the sovereignty of the Tamil people in the Northern Province. He further said that the Tamil people should have justice and equality and that then all ethnicities and races should work together to build the country which has collapsed due to various issues. Meanwhile, ITAK MP Dharmalingam Sithadthan, who also spoke at the conference, said that the demand for self-governance of the Tamil people could have been met a long time ago. However, he said that instead of granting those rights, several Governments had waged a war based on the ideology of the Sinhala-Buddhist majority, and borrowed heavily from other countries. “Until a lasting solution is found to the demands of the Tamil people, the only solution now is to implement the entire 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which, if implemented, will attract lots of investments from the Tamil diaspora and Tamil Nadu to make this country a paradise,” he claimed.
