By Buddhika Samaraweera State Minister of Primary Healthcare, Epidemics, and Covid-19 Disease Control Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle urged all parties, including school administrations and parents, to act responsibly to ensure the continuation of educational activities in schools islandwide amidst the pandemic situation. Speaking to the media yesterday (18), she said that school principals and teachers should be vigilant, adding that if there are students with symptoms such as fever, cold, or cough, such students should be handed over to their parents. In addition, parents should keep students with such symptoms at home instead of sending them to school, she added. “President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has also instructed that a programme be put in place to identify and control the small units from where Covid-19 patients are being reported. Therefore, we urge school principals and teachers as well as parents to be vigilant in this regard and to act responsibly,” she reiterated. Meanwhile, health experts have recently warned that schools will have to be closed once again if the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases reported in the country is not brought under control. Addressing a media briefing on Wednesday (17), Dr. Deepal Perera of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH) in Colombo stated: “Currently, there is an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases across the country. Therefore, Covid-19 infections are also more prevalent among children, and this may lead to a closure of schools again.” Furthermore, Ministry of Health Communications Director and Deputy Director General of Public Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath also stated on Wednesday that there have been reports of schoolchildren and school staff being infected with Covid-19 in several provinces. He added that if the number of such cases increase further, schools would have to be closed first.
