Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda said that steps should be taken to strengthen the economy of the fishing community through the project of sea leech cultivation launched in the last few months to cover the entire Northern Province.
He was speaking after a 20- day visit to Iranamatha village in Kilinochchi to inspect the progress of the sea leech export project launched in March.
Speaking further, the Minister said that the Sea Leeches Cultivation Project was launched to create an environment where fishermen could join other members of fishing families to earn as much as they earn from the fish resources they harvest in the oceans. He said it was his duty to work towards the upliftment of the family economy.
He also said that his Ministry will launch these projects throughout the country and make the maximum possible contribution to the daily economy through the fishing industry.
