At least 42 people were admitted to the Maskeliya Divisional Hospital yesterday due to severe cases of food poisoning.
Amongst those admitted were several children as well as estate workers from the Laxapana Estate in Nallathanniya.
A spokesperson at the Maskeliya Divisional Hospital told the The Sunday Morning that the people were admitted to hospital after consuming food served during an annual festival held at a Hindu kovil in the estate premises.
The hospital stated that the first patient was admitted after showing symptoms of food poisoning at around 1 a.m. last morning.
The spokesperson also said that none of the patients were in critical conditions and that by last afternoon several of those patients had already been discharged.
An inquiry has been launched by the Medical Officer in Maskeliya.
