SL lifesaving team set to compete at World Championship

The Sri Lankan lifesaving team will be flying to Riccione, Italy, on 23 September to compete at the Lifesaving World Championships.  Organised by the International Lifesaving Federation, the tournament will be held from 25 September to 3 October. The tournament is organised every two years to provide a platform for lifesaving athletes to showcase their talents and fight to become the world’s best in lifesaving.  The Sri Lankan team will consist of five athletes – four male and one female athlete. The team will be led by Captain N.K. Manoj Kumara of the Sri Lanka Police. He will take part in two events – the line throw and 4×90 m beach relay. The team Vice Captain is national swimming champion Akalanka Peiris of the Sri Lanka Army. He will be competing in six events – 100 m manikin carry with fins, 100 m manikin tow with fins, 50 m manikin carry, line throw (patient), 100 m rescue medley, and 4×90 m beach relay. Peiris is currently the best swimmer in the country and has a wealth of experience competing in swimming competitions all around the world.  T.G.R.M. Sharika Neranjan and K.G.P. Priyashantha will compete in three events – 90 m beach sprint, beach flag, and 4×90 m beach relay. The only female athlete to represent Sri Lanka in the Championship is L.K.G.K.K. Dassanayake. She will take part in four events – 90 m beach sprint, beach flag, line throw, and 2 km beach run. Sri Lanka Lifesaving Association President Asanka Nanayakkara will take on duties as the team manager/coach.
