SLPP Government doesn't want help despite having messed up already: Harsha

30 Jun 2022

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the Government under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa doesn't want the help of the opposition despite having messed up already, says Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dr Harsha De Silva on a twitter post further to a discussion held with the US Treasury, State Department representatives and US Ambassador Julie Chung yesterday (29). "Sri Lanka crisis is utterly complicated. Coming months will be very tough. Fact is the IMF can’t lend to us until our creditors give an assurance on their agreement with Sri Lanka on debt restructuring now complicated with case by A creditor. Haircut will be based on Government of Gotabaya Rajapaksa's agreement on fiscal consolidation. As a responsible opposition we agree that much delayed major reforms must be undertaken to save #SriLanka. We must open up, break the shackles and engage with the world. So, we don’t want to scuttle the Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickremesinghe plan; but there must be one. Already very late," the tweet mentioned. It further noted that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should present the fiscal consolidation plan and it was much need to go back to the Mangala Samaraweera program, which must be done with transparency and the support of the public. "SOE reforms are an absolute must. But, must be done transparently and with public support. Also a social safety net is a MUST to deal with the low income. Need equity. I offered to Chair the Public Finance Committee in the Sri Lanka Parliament so that we, as opposition, and the government could arrive at a reform agenda; a convergence," his twitter post concluded.
