Sri Lanka loses opportunity to host Mrs. World

04 Aug 2021

BY Dinitha Rathnayake  Sri Lanka has lost the opportunity to host the 2021 Mrs. World pageant as the event’s organising committee has decided to hold the competition in Las Vegas, Winchester, Nevada, United States in January 2022, instead of in Sri Lanka as had been previously planned.  The Mrs. World organising committee made the official announcement on Facebook saying:  “The Mrs. World pageant will take place at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino from 9 to 16 January 2022. The final competition will be on 15 January 2022.”  Earlier, former Mrs. World Caroline Jurie, returned the crown on her own accord weeks after an on stage fracas in which she pulled the crown off the head of the winner of the 2021 Mrs. Sri Lanka beauty pageant Pushpika De Silva.  “Her decision to voluntarily resign was made solely by Jurie herself,” the Mrs. World Inc. said in a subsequent news release on social media.  Sri Lanka was to host the 2021 Mrs. World pageant. This was after Jurie became the second Sri Lankan to be crowned Mrs. World at a pageant held in Las Vegas in 2019.  However, in April this year, Mrs. Ireland Kate Schneider was made the new Mrs. World after Jurie stepped down.  Further, the country’s Covid-19 situation has led to restrictions being imposed on public gatherings including events, including limitations on the number of participants who attend along with physical restrictions being placed such as mandatory social distancing and face mask wearing.
