16 Dec 2021

  • Pathirage says retirement due to contract expiration this month
  • Dismisses speculations of resigning over salary reduction anomalies
BY Shenal Fernando SriLankan Airlines Group Chief Operating (CEO) and Chief Finance Officer (CFO) Vipula Gunatilleka will be retiring at the end of the year upon the conclusion of his current contract with the company, The Morning Business learns. Speaking to us yesterday (15), SriLankan Airlines Group Chairman Ashok Pathirage dismissed the rumours that are circulating, stating that the SriLankan Airlines CEO/CFO will be resigning over a dispute in relation to the reduction of salaries of SriLankan Airlines pilots. “There is no truth to these rumours. His contract is coming to an end and he will be retiring at the end of the year. He will make an announcement with regard to this,” he said. According to the alleged rumours circulating in media, Gunatilleka will be resigning in response to a recent development, where a matter had been brought before the Office of the Commissioner of Labour upon a complaint lodged by the Airline Pilots’ Guild of Sri Lanka (ALPGSL), which had apparently proven that the reduction of the agreed salary of pilots working for SriLankan Airlines was an arbitrary act by Gunatilleka. However, Speaking to The Morning Business, SriLankan Airlines Manager of Media Relations and Public Relations Deepal Perera dismissed the rumours as false. Gunatilleka was appointed as Group CEO and CFO of SriLankan Airlines on 1 August 2018 and was responsible for the overall management of the airline. Previously, he was the CFO of SriLankan Airlines under the management of Emirates and played a pivotal role during the management transition from Emirates to the Government of Sri Lanka.
