The Education Ministry was expected to release the verdict based on the inquiry held by the Sri Lanka School Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) regarding the issue where St. Peter’s College Colombo had fielded an ineligible player during the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2022.
The alleged player has been a part of the Peterite outfit that played against Dharmaraja College and Vidyartha College in the first two weeks. The issue was initially raised by Dharmaraja College to the SLSRFA who had looked into the matter and found that St. Peter’s College had fielded a player who had failed his G.C.E Ordinary Level (O/L) Examinations. The player in concern had failed mathematics twice, after skipping his first attempt. While having another attempt remaining, he had not submitted his application for this year’s O/L Examination.
After a thorough investigation, the SLSRFA submitted a report to the Education Ministry for further investigation to decide on the actions to be taken against the violation of the tournament laws.
The verdict was scheduled to be given yesterday (23), but after several failed attempts to contact SLSRFA President B.A. Abeyrathna and SLSRFA Secretary Nirodha Wijerama, The Morning Sports found out that the authorities are still pondering the next steps.
In the past, various schools have been punished for similar violations which resulted in those schools being demoted. In 2012, Vidyartha College, Kandy was suspended for a year after they were found guilty of fielding a player who impersonated another senior member by falsifying documents such as the National Identity Card. Most recently, Trinity College and Dharmaraja College were also handed suspensions for disciplinary issues during matches.
With the Dialog Schools Knockout Championships 2022 scheduled to be held this weekend, the verdict was expected to be released yesterday. It seems like the tournament will either have to be postponed or cancelled, as the authorities struggle to find a solution to the matter at hand.
