State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura tests Covid-positive

24 Aug 2021

State Minister of Development of Minor Crops-related Industries and Export Promotion Janaka Wakkumbura has reportedly contracted Covid-19. On Sunday (22), Wakkumbura had announced that he was under self-isolation, after his daughter tested positive in a rapid antigen test (RAT). The State Minister was thus directed to undergo a PCR test on Monday (23), which confirmed him as being Covid-19-positive. Wakkumbura is the latest in a string of MPs and ministers to test positive for Covid-19. Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage; State Minister of Rattan, Brass, Pottery, Furniture, and Rural Industrial Promotion Prasanna Ranaweera; and MPs Rohana Dissanayake, Tissa Kuttiarachchi, Dilip Wedaarachchi, and Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam also tested positive for the virus earlier this month. Meanwhile, veteran politician Mangala Samaraweera, who was receiving treatment for Covid-19, succumbed to the virus yesterday (24). He was 65 years old at the time of his passing.
