Sunny Side Up: Ali Sabri’s violation

[caption id="attachment_139076" align="alignright" width="268"] Ali Sabri[/caption] Puttalam District parliamentarian of the All-Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) Ali Sabri had allegedly violated the current travel restrictions imposed to control the Covid-19 outbreak by issuing passes with his signature for people to travel amidst the restrictions.  Despite the MP not possessing any legal authority to issue such travel permits, he had allegedly issued them, saying he was closely linked to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser Basil Rajapaksa.  While authorities had imposed restrictions on travel between provinces, some persons had reportedly used the “permits” issued by Ali Sabri to travel between Puttalam and Vavuniya.  Permits of this nature are usually issued by Divisional or District Secretaries.  However, an inquiry is being carried out into the “permits” issued by the MP.  Ali Sabri was one of the two ACMC MPs to vote in support of the Port City Economic Commission Bill in Parliament recently. He also voted in favour of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution. Both these acts were in violation of the ACMC’s official stance on the respective matters. The ACMC had subsequently suspended his party membership.
