Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake were united last week over Kumaratunga’s political career. Bandaranayake delivered the keynote address at the launch of Kumaratunga’s biography – Chandrika – at the BMICH yesterday (14). It was Bandaranayake's first public appearance since retirement. Addressing the gathering, the former Chief Justice noted that the country was facing immense difficulties and that people should look at what they could do for the country instead of what they could expect from the country. She further noted the importance of an independent Judiciary and hailed Kumaratunga for never interfering with the Judiciary during her tenure as President. A group of governing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs seems to be turning towards former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga amidst the growing crises in the country and the waning popularity of the Government. Former State Minister Susil Premajayantha, who was removed from his post recently, and several other Government Parliamentarians attended slain Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike’s 123rd birth commemoration organised by Kumaratunga on 8 January. Kumaratunga had organised one event to commemorate Bandaranaike’s 123rd birthday in front of the Bandaranaike statue at Galle Face Green, while the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) founded by Bandaranaike, had organised another. However, Premajayantha, State Minister Vidura Wickramanayake, and SLPP MPs Chandima Weerakkody and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, along with Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Kumara Welgama and former Ministers Jeevan Kumaratunga and Arjuna Ranatunga, were present at the event organised by Kumaratunga. Speaking to the media after the event, Premajayantha said that he attended the event to commemorate Bandaranaike as he felt that it was the ideal time to commemorate the programme initiated by Bandaranaike and later continued by the late Premier Sirimavo Bandaranaike.
