Sunny Side Up: Prez’s jumbo to temple

03 Oct 2021

The issue of tamed elephants and their ownership has become a much-talked-about topic, which also saw Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake revealing details about elephants owned by political figures and their supporters. Dissanayake revealed in Parliament, during the last session, information on an elephant said to be owned by the President. However, State Minister Wimalaweera Dissanayake had responded, saying the respective elephant was given to a temple. According to the State Minister, an elephant owned by the President was at the Pinnawala Park in 2015, and following the court decision to return the elephant to the previous owner, the elephant was handed over to a temple. Dissanayake made these statements during a public meeting in Dehiattakandiya recently.
