Commemorating the 1st Battalion of the Sinha Regiment
By Nisal RukshanIn the proud history of the Sri Lanka Army, the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment was formed as a rifle regiment designated on 1 October, with its headquarters at the Imperial Camp Diyatalawa, as the 1st Battalion of the Ceylon Sinha Regiment.These lions, with the motto of “swift and bold” black lions are now 66 years old. During these 66 years, with that start, the lions’ dens were strategically established according to the country's needs, starting with the insurgency and the ruthless wake of terrorism. Although, in reality, they showcased their bravery during humanitarian operations, 143 officers and 3,719 other ranks made the supreme sacrifice while defending the country’s territorial integrity.Captain Saliya Aladeniya (hero of Kokavil in 1990), Corporal Gamini Kularathna, well-known as Hasalaka Gamini (hero of Elephant Pass in 1991), Corporal Abeyrathna Banda, Sergeant A.M Anura, Lance Corporal Mahinda Rajapaksha are the heroes that made the supreme sacrifice in the Sinha Regiment, and were awarded Parama Weera Wibhshana (PWV) by the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The regimental centre of the regiment is currently located in Ambepussa in a picturesque location consisting of state-of-the-art architectural and landscaping settings and the natural beauty of the flowing Madu Oya. Security Forces Commander – East Maj. General Priyantha Jayawardena holds the appointment of the Colonel of the regiment, and Brigadier Nishantha Muthumala is its Centre Commandant.Coinciding with the 66th Regimental day (1 October 2022), troops honoured their regiment Colonel with a guard turnout and parade, followed by floral tributes to the fallen war heroes.
