Trousers permitted for female public sector workers from Wednesday

26 Sep 2022

BY Mirudhula Thambiah   The Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government will finalise the amended circular permitting suitable attire for Government Sector Employees today (26) and is expected to be brought into effect before Wednesday (28). Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government P.K. Mayadunne told The Morning yesterday (25) that an amended circular permitting suitable attire for public sector employees will be finalised today. “We will be finalising the circular on Monday and it will be made effective before Wednesday,” he added. He noted the circular will be amended from “may be” to “shall be”. This means the circular will permit the right of the employee to wear suitable attire. “This amendment would allow the employer also to permit the employee, for example, to wear a saree, osariya, or trousers,” he added. Furthermore, this decision was made considering the rapid increase in prices of sarees and other clothing worn by public sector employees. This would also enable employees to be more productive, he said.
