Vaccines for kids below 12 years still a suggestion: DDGHS

12 Feb 2022

The vaccine roll out for children below the age of 12 years is still in the suggestive stage and no firm decision has been made as yet, says Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath. He made this statement while speaking to The Morning today (12). "This is still in the suggestion stage, and no firm decision has been made as yet. As for children between the ages of 12-15 years who have already received their first anti-covid vaccine, they will soon be eligible for the 2nd dose. Some research is required before the administration of the covid vaccine for children below the age of 12 years, and medical professionals will be working on that," said Dr Herath. He further clarified that a circular has still not been issued by the Director General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardena, in regards to the vaccination of children below the age of 12 years. Earlier today, it was reported that State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals (Prof.) Channa Jayasumana said that the ministry is awaiting recommendations from the health authorities to administer the second dose for children between ages 12 and 15, and that the ministry is also seeking recommendations from the health authorities to vaccinate children below the age of 12 as well. Several attempts to contact State Minister Jayasumana proved to be futile.
