Water villa resorts to come at Kalpitiya Islet

  • Cabinet nods approval for Tourism Minister’s proposal  
By Imsha Iqbal  The Cabinet of Ministers granted the approval on Monday (19) to establish water tourist residences and water villas with the objective of promoting tourism in Kalpitiya and other coastal areas of Sri Lanka.  It has been identified that the concept of water villa can be utilised in promoting tourism at the aforementioned city in the Puttalam District. It is now emerging as a new tourist destination with government initiatives in order to develop as an attractive destination. According to the touristdirectory.lk, the city is located 167 km north to Colombo on the western coastal belt, and Kalpitiya can be considered as an undiscovered destination in the island of Sri Lanka. Currently, this tourist destination has facilities in windsurfing, kitesurfing, dolphin and whale watching, snorkeling and diving, kayaking and paramotoring: it is said to be available at Udappuwa, which is 70 km south of the Kalpitiya Town. Accordingly, 12 islets of the said area have been already acquired to the Sri Lanka Tourist Development Authority (SLTDA) in upgrading and promoting islet resort concept.  The approved project proposal is to be implemented thus by Sun Resort Investment Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. This company has obtained Wellei I, II, and III islets in Kalpitiya for a long-term lease with the primary objective of constructing a luxury tourist resort which consists of a total 50 tourist residences. That would include both water tourist residences and water villas.  The resolution was furnished by the Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga, which has been forwarded by aforesaid private company.  Sun Resort Investment Lanka has, in fact, three parent companies who are investors. They are Lets Travel Sri Lanka, Sun Travel, and Lets Travel Switzerland.  At the same time, SLTDA acts as the government authority that has been tasked for planning, developing, regulation, and policy implementation with regard to tourism related matters and other related industries. SLTDA was established in 2007.
