Weerasekara ‘fine’ with removal of departments

02 Aug 2021

By Dinitha Rathnayake Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara has said that he is “completely fine” with the removal of two departments from under his Ministry’s purview to the Defence Ministry. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (1), Minister Weerasekara said that he was fine with the removal, and that he also received a call from the President related to this matter. According to him, the President wanted the fullest support of the Civil Security Department (CSD) and the Department of Multipurpose Development Task Force for ongoing development projects, which was the main reason for this removal. “I have no issue with this removal, since this decision was for a good reason,” Weerasekara said. An extraordinary gazette was issued last week to re-allocate the two departments, which were previously under the Ministry of Public Security. In the gazette, issued under the President’s signature, the Civil Security Department (CSD) and the Department of Multipurpose Development Task Force have been allocated under the Defence Ministry, which is currently under the purview of the President. Accordingly, Minister Sarath Weerasekara will now only oversee the Sri Lanka Police and the National Police Training Institute.
