The reason as to why the Government and its officials are trying to unload the vessel carrying the Chinese fertiliser is because the Prime Minister's secretary and the Chinese company’s agents are relatives, said Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) member Dr Nalinda Jayatissa. "The local agent for the Chinese manufactured fertiliser is Chelina Capital Corporation, and Lolitha Abeysinghe is the Chairman of that company. Prime Minister’s secretary Gamini Senerath and Lolitha Abeysinghe are close relatives, and their relationship has not been exposed recently. It was Lolitha Abeysinghe's Chelina Capital Corporation that had served as a consultant for Chinese projects that took place in the country before 2015. By that time, Lolitha and his company had conducted about 15 projects which amounted to USD 7 billion. It is alleged that Gamini Senerath had secured these projects," said Jayatissa. He further alleged that the Government has chosen to disregard the research and International credibility by the National Plant Quarantine service by trying to go forward with this deal. "We are suspicious whether this is happening because of their relationship. We ask the Prime Minister's secretary Gamini Senarath to come before the media and explain his relationship with Lolitha Abeysinghe. Lolitha Abeysinghe should explain his relationship with the Prime Minister's secretary. It is then that the people will be able to recognise the reason why the Government is so commited to this deal," Jayatissa concluded.
