  • Ranil says any decision would come only after discussions with party leaders
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that he can only attend to the public’s demands for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation following the passage of the 21st Amendment and after holding discussions with all party leaders. “In response to the demands of the people asking President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to step down from his presidency, I have to attend to this matter once the debate pertaining to the 21st Amendment is debated in Parliament, and upon discussion with the party leaders. The abolishment of the Executive Presidency can only happen after a vote in Parliament. As for the 21st Amendment, a special committee will be appointed under the leadership of MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and this will be discussed in detail,” he said. Wickremesinghe was responding to a letter submitted by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MPs Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara earlier this week with questions regarding Wickremesignhe’s plans for the future. However, the PM has promised to protect the “GotaGoGama” site for peaceful protestors. “As for the attacks on ‘GotaGoGama’, I have made sure that legal action will be taken and have also informed the Police that a report must be given to me twice every week on the update of the investigation,” PM Wickremesinghe stated in his letter of response yesterday (18). As for the Easter Sunday attacks of 2019, Wickremesinghe said that there is an ongoing investigation into the matter, and that he would support the investigators if they required any assistance. “The Easter Attacks investigation is currently underway. If the Police and investigators need any assistance, I will give my fullest support to ensure that justice prevails. As for the nationalisation of organisations, I have taken measures to initiate this, but we need to take this forward with the support of everyone within the organisations, and this will be attended to. In regards to the corruption and fraud in the country, I will not tolerate it for whatsoever reason, and will ensure that all action will be taken to put a stop to corruption within the country,” Wickremesinghe’s letter further mentioned. In regards to the question posed by the MPs about the release of former SJB MP Ranjan Ramanayake, who is currently serving a sentence over contempt of court, Wickremesinghe stated that a special legal team has been consulted and will ensure that the matter will be looked at through legal methods. “I intend to take steps to form a stable government, but as of now, the interim Government was formed urgently to bring some stability to the Government and Parliament, which would help bring the country out of the severe economic crisis, and I appreciate if everyone can step in to support in bringing this stability to the nation,” Wickremesinghe’s letter concluded.
